Since July 2021, we have been able to access the Museum again and prepare exhibitions. Our first one Memories and Mementoes was well received and featured items from different categories which do not always feature in themed exhibitions.
Our new exhibition “Those were the days……A History of Mere through Postcards” is now up and ready to view. We have a wonderful collection of postcards which give a brilliant insight into the people who wrote them and received them.
The permanent exhibition has also been updated both with items and information about Mere bringing it right up to 2022.
We currently have three items at Chippenham two of which are undergoing restoration. One is the plaster horse which used to sit in the Saddler’s window in Castle Street. Once he has been repaired he will be displayed. The second is a bronze sword with the head of Diana the hunting goddess. This needs work to prevent further erosion and cleaning and this will be placed in the permanent exhibition on return.
